Why do we need to take Restyl(Alprazolam)?
Restyl is very effective in the treatment of Generalized Anxiety in particular. In our day-to-day stress filled lives anxiety seems to be our constant companion. In order to raise the quality of life and relieve us from stress Restyl is a good medication to start with under medical supervision. Restyl also helps patients with panic disorders, depression and so on to lead a comparatively normal and anxiety free life. As we are all aware anxiety can lead to many serious complications especially cardiac problems.
How Does Restyl act?
Their exact mechanism of action is unknown. Clinically, all benzodiazepines cause a dose-related central nervous system depressant activity varying from mild impairment of task performance to hypnosis. Alprazolam binds to the GABAA, subtype of the GABA receptor, increasing inhibitory effects of GABA within the central nervous system. The binding site for benzodiazepines is distinct from the binding site for GABA on the GABA receptor.
There are certain things, which you should know before taking Restyl (Alprazolam.)
Alprazolam concentrations may be reduced by up to 50% in smokers compared to non-smokers
If Alprazolam is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus and ideally discontinue the drug.
Alcohol should not be generally consumed during the treatment with Alprazolam
Alprazolam undergoes transplacental passage and is excreted in human milk, nursing mothers should follow physician’s assistance in this case
Drugs that you need to be careful while taking Restyl
Avoid Potent CYP3A inhibitors –Increases the drug concentration of Alprazolam for e.g Ketoconazole, Itraconazol, other Azole-type antifungal agents, Nefazodone, Fluvoxamine, Cimetidine, Fluoxetine, Propoxyphene, Oral Contraceptives – In this case dose needs to be reduced to avoid adverse effects
Potent CYP3A inducers—Carbamazepine may decrease Alprazolam -- in this case dose should be increased in order to achieve desired therapeutic effect
Possible drug interactions have been reported with Diltiazem, Isoniazid, Macrolide antibiotics such as Erythromycin and Clarithromycin, and Grapefruit juice
Common problems that you may encounter with treatment of Restyl
Drug withdrawal syndrome is the most common of all
Psychological Dependence
Inter Dose Anxiety
Common side effects that may be encountered with the treatment of Restyl
Sedation
Somnolence
Dysarthria
Abnormal coordination
In geriatric patients the
dose needs to be properly adjusted and administered as metabolic activities are low in geriatric patients and they suffer from co morbid conditions
In patients with concomitant diseases
Care should be taken in patients with advanced liver disease
Also in patients with debilitating disease
And in patients with impaired renal functions
Important
Never take Restyl without prescription
Physician’s assistance is a must when you want to discontinue the drug (cases of seizures have been reported)

I have been taking Restyl since 2 years and I am addicted totally to it. I was under depression and found it difficult to sleep even for a minute. Depression nearly finished me completely this is when I started taking Restyl 0.25 and now I am totally addicted to it. I tried to skip it for a day many times but I cannot sleep even for 5 minutes if I dont take it.Often I take it after consuming beer. As if I take only beer I do not get any sleep. Of late I am witnising memory loss I fail to remember many things. I am taking half tablet now since 20 days and my eyes are heavy the whole day and itch the whole day. I cannot even see from close and need to keep the reading matter at a distance to see well. From close everhting seems blurd. Is all this because of Restyl? Or do I need to see a doctor. if Yes which doctor do I visit??
ReplyDeleteYou need to quit taking restyl. I was taking restyl 0.5mg since almost 5years now. Infact, i was so addicted to restyl that it stopped working on me and increased the dose from one tablet to two, from two to three and there came a time when i started taking around 9-18tablets in a day, everyday. i started memory loss. i missed the memory of days, as if those days never existed in my life. they were missing from my life. i started sleep walking. i didnt remember making phone calls to friends or family. i didnt remember waking up at night and eating food or ice creams or chocolates. i didnt remember cooking and serving. i just didnt remember anything. My condition really got worst. it was not easy quitting. I tried many a times to quit restyl. You need strong will power to quit the medicine. Even my eye sight got affected. Most of the time i was sick. cold, sinus, fever, body tremors. pain in the feet and palms when i tried to quit it. Because of insomnia i came to know about this tablet and when i went into depression and was sleepless i started taking restyl and this had become the best way to get away with the pain, sadness and depression and i got some sleep. i got so used to it that after taking 16pills also i barely slept for 4-5hours.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, i visited a therapist and after taking a few sessions with him, i have successfully quit restyl and i am not into depression any more. from 19tablets i directly went to 0 tablets..thats none...the therapist never gave me any medicine whatsover. i think you should also visit a therapist. it would help you.
Also you can opt for camomile tea, green tea, mint tea, any herbal tea...it helps you get a good sleep. I would advise you not to drink. dont find another harmful substitute to sleep like alcohol. you will be fine. i am sure. i am a young lady in early 30's. And i think any one can quit it. Its difficult but not impossible.
I wish you all the best. Take care
What you have experienced is true as I have gone thru the same stages, but to my bad luck, even after consulting a therapist there is no change in my health and the sleepless nights I spend if I dont take this drug(Restyl) even one night. I tried alcohol too...but I cant drink alcohol everyday. Hope to get some better medicine to come out from depression.
Deletestay away from this tablet if you are taking without medical advise. It has spoiled my personal life and professional life. I lost most of my good friends.
ReplyDeleteI still take as an addict , but, one tablet of 0.5 mg in the evenings. The friends I have lost have gone for ever and I feel guilty for the damage done.
